Announcing the 3rd London appearance of the Ai Networking Cocktail series: There is simply no substitute for a little face time, so Airline Information has teamed up with the true purveyors of travel marketing, SeaMountain, to organize globally a series of FREE networking cocktails on various critical issues for the airline industry. This instalment will look at business travel.
Will longhaul full fare business travel ever truly recover? Or, should airlines adapt to new market realities that include "Chameleon Business Travellers"
According to IATA's latest statistics, the fall in the number of passengers flying in Business Class is stabilizing, but recovery of traditional "Full J" Business Class traffic to pre-recession levels still shows little sign of long-term recovery. But, airlines have traditionally relied upon high-yield business travelers to subsidize much lower yield leisure traffic. This formula has already been "turned on its head" for shorthaul traffic due to the emergence of Low Cost Carriers, but until the recent economic downturn, it remained effective for longhaul services.
Will longhaul full fare business travel ever truly recover? Or, should airlines adapt to new market realities that include "Chameleon Business Travellers" who fly in Economy Class and return home on Sunday in order to obtain the lowest fare? Should airlines boldly embrace the fast-growing trend of telepresence and videoconferencing as a complement to travel or even partner with companies like WebEx, GotoMeeting and Skype and earn valuable affiliate revenue from promoting their services?
